China Vows Firm Action Against Separatism, Reaffirms Reunification Goal

China's top legislator Zhao Leji reiterated Beijing's determination to oppose separatist activities and external interference during a key symposium in the capital on Friday. The remarks came at an event marking the 20th anniversary of the Anti-Secession Law, legislation enacted to safeguard national sovereignty amid cross-strait tensions.

As chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, Zhao emphasized the need to 'resolutely combat any form of Taiwan independence separatist schemes' while promoting peaceful reunification efforts. The senior Communist Party official described the law as 'a powerful legal weapon to preserve peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.'

The symposium highlighted Beijing's long-standing position that resolving Taiwan issues remains 'an internal affair of the Chinese people.' Analysts suggest the anniversary underscores China's evolving legal framework for cross-strait relations, particularly as geopolitical tensions rise. Zhao also affirmed commitments to deepen economic and cultural exchanges while maintaining opposition to 'external forces attempting to manipulate Taiwan affairs.'

The Anti-Secession Law, passed in 2005, authorizes non-peaceful means as a last resort to prevent the island of Taiwan's formal separation from the Chinese mainland. Observers note the anniversary comes amid increased regional focus on cross-strait stability, with global markets closely watching developments that could affect Asian trade routes and semiconductor supply chains.
