China Completes 280K Community Renovations Since 2019

China has revitalized 280,000 residential communities since 2019 as part of a nationwide effort to modernize urban living spaces, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development announced Sunday. Minister Ni Hong described the initiative as a 'cornerstone of inclusive urban development' during a press conference in Beijing.

The renovations include upgraded drainage systems, elevator installations in older buildings, and expanded green spaces—measures designed to improve quality of life for over 100 million residents. Analysts note the program has also stimulated local economies, with over RMB 6 trillion ($825 billion) funneled into construction sectors and related industries.

'This isn’t just about infrastructure—it’s about creating sustainable communities that foster social cohesion,' said urban planning expert Dr. Li Wei, who advised on several provincial projects. The ministry reports that 65% of upgraded neighborhoods now feature elderly care centers and childcare facilities, addressing demographic shifts in urban areas.

Eastern provinces account for 40% of completed renovations, while central and western regions saw accelerated progress after 2021 through targeted funding allocations. Authorities plan to expand the program to 50,000 additional communities annually through 2025, prioritizing earthquake-prone zones and extreme weather preparedness.
