BARKAM CITY, Sichuan — Gashi Wangmo, a deputy to China's 14th National People's Congress (NPC) and director of an elderly care center in Sichuan's Barkam City, highlighted significant advancements in senior care services during a media session at the Deputies' Corridor in Beijing on Wednesday.
Speaking ahead of the third session of the 14th NPC, Wangmo emphasized measurable progress in care quality, infrastructure, and accessibility across Sichuan, a province grappling with a rapidly aging population. \"Mountain regions like Barkam face unique challenges, but targeted policies have strengthened support networks,\" she said, citing expanded telehealth programs and trained community volunteers.
The remarks come as China prioritizes elder care reforms to address demographic shifts. Sichuan's initiatives include subsidized home modifications for seniors and partnerships with private-sector providers to expand rural facilities. Wangmo added that local governments now allocate over 15% of annual budgets to elderly welfare programs, up from 9% five years ago.
Over 3,000 care centers now operate province-wide, with coverage expanding to 89% of townships. Analysts note these efforts align with nationwide strategies to balance economic growth with social stability as nearly 20% of China's population is projected to be over 60 by 2035.
