Real Madrid suffered a 2-1 defeat against Real Betis on Saturday, ending their hopes of topping La Liga. The loss saw Madrid level on 54 points with league leaders Barcelona, who are set to host Real Sociedad on Sunday.
The match took an unexpected turn when former Madrid player Isco scored a second-half penalty, securing Betis' victory and preventing Madrid from gaining the upper hand in the standings.
The first goal came early as Madrid dominated play, with Brahim Diaz tapping in a pass from Ferland Mendy, following a through ball from Kylian Mbappé. However, Betis bounced back in the second half, with Johnny Cardoso equalizing from a close-range header off a corner taken by Isco.
Madrid's goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois made a crucial save to deny Cardoso a second goal just before halftime. Nevertheless, Isco earned the lead for Betis with a clinical spot kick after Antonio Rudiger fouled Jesus Rodriguez nine minutes into the second half.
Despite Carlo Ancelotti's efforts to rejuvenate the attack by introducing Arda Guler and Endrick, Betis' defense held firm. Adrian, Betis' goalkeeper, also blocked a late attempt from Vinicius Jr., sealing the victory for the visitors.
Isco, named man of the game, expressed his exhaustion but happiness at the win, saying, \"I'm happy for the win against the best team out there today. Hopefully we can finish the year in the best possible way.\"
Following the defeat, Real Madrid remains in contention for the La Liga title, with Atletico Madrid, currently third with 53 points, having the potential to overtake both leaders later on Saturday when they host Athletic Bilbao.
Betis now holds 38 points, securing the final European qualifying berth in sixth place.
