In a significant move on the third anniversary of the full escalation of the Ukraine crisis, China has called on the United Nations Security Council to take a proactive role in promoting peace talks. Fu Cong, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, addressed the council on Monday, emphasizing the need for a negotiated settlement to the ongoing conflict.
\"At present, when the Ukraine issue is at a critical juncture for a negotiated settlement, we expect the international community to create a favorable atmosphere for promoting a political solution to the crisis,\" Fu Cong stated during the meeting.
Highlighting the importance of dialogue over confrontation, Fu expressed China's support for all efforts dedicated to peace, including the U.S.-Russia agreement to initiate peace talks. He underscored that the ultimate resolution of any conflict lies at the negotiation table.
Fu also called on Europe to contribute to peace efforts by addressing the root causes of the crisis and establishing a balanced, effective, and sustainable security framework. This, he argued, is essential for achieving long-term security and stability on the European continent.
China reaffirmed its readiness to play a constructive role in the political settlement of the crisis, taking into account the concerns of the international community, especially those of the Global South.
The Security Council's meeting saw the adoption of a U.S.-drafted resolution aimed at ending the conflict swiftly and securing a lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine. The resolution garnered 10 votes in favor, with none against, and received five abstentions from France, Britain, Denmark, Greece, and Slovenia.
