Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao has formally expressed his concerns regarding the recent U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports. In a letter addressed to the newly appointed U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Wang extended his congratulations on Lutnick's new role as the 41st Secretary of Commerce.
Wang emphasized the importance of economic and trade relations between China and the United States, highlighting that as the world's two largest economies, their cooperation is vital for mutual development and global economic growth. He acknowledged the significant role that both countries' commerce ministries have played in fostering economic and trade collaboration over the past years.
Despite the existing cooperation, Wang voiced strong dissatisfaction with the U.S. decision to impose a 10 percent tariff on Chinese products, citing concerns over issues related to fentanyl. He pointed out that China and the U.S. have achieved remarkable results through extensive cooperation on fentanyl control.
The Chinese minister criticized the unilateral imposition of tariffs, stating that it has disrupted normal economic and trade cooperation between the two nations. He expressed China's willingness to engage in dialogue and consultation on equal footing to resolve the concerns of both countries, aiming to create a fair and predictable policy environment that fosters practical cooperation between the business communities of China and the U.S.
Wang concluded by reiterating China's commitment to mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation as the foundation for strengthening economic and trade ties with the United States.
