Chinese Premier Li Qiang has expressed China's commitment to deepening political mutual trust and expanding practical cooperation with the Cook Islands during his meeting with Cook Islands Prime Minister Mark Brown in Harbin City, northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, on Friday afternoon.

Premier Li highlighted the 28-year diplomatic relationship between China and the Cook Islands, emphasizing the foundation of sincerity, friendship, and equality that has driven continuous, mutually beneficial cooperation across various fields.

China respects the Cook Islands' independence in choosing its development path and aims to enhance political trust and practical collaboration to deliver tangible results and benefits for both nations.

Aligning with the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative, Li outlined plans to advance cooperation in the marine sector, infrastructure construction, agriculture, and fishery, aiming to create synergies that support common development goals.

Additionally, Premier Li indicated China's willingness to import more high-quality products from the Cook Islands and to encourage tourism, fostering economic ties between the two nations.

The leaders also discussed strengthening exchanges and cooperation in education, culture, health, and youth sectors, as well as increasing people-to-people interactions to solidify friendly relations.

On the global stage, China and the Cook Islands agreed to collaborate more closely in multilateral arenas, uphold the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities, advocate for a fair and win-win global climate governance system, and jointly tackle the challenges posed by climate change.

Prime Minister Brown lauded the enduring friendly and cooperative relationship spanning nearly three decades, acknowledging China as a vital partner and steadfast friend.

During the meeting, Brown expressed gratitude for China's long-term support and assistance in the economic and social development of the Cook Islands and other Pacific island nations.

Reaffirming commitment to the one-China principle, Brown stated that the Cook Islands will continue to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation with China in areas such as agriculture, fishery, infrastructure, people’s livelihoods, ocean, and tourism. The Cook Islands also plans to enhance multilateral coordination on climate change and pursue sustained and in-depth development of the bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership.
