China and Thailand Unite to Combat Human Trafficking and Online Scams

In a significant move against transnational crimes, China and Thailand issued a joint statement on Saturday pledging to strengthen their cooperation in combating online scam operations, human and drug trafficking, and money laundering.

Online scam operations have become a pervasive issue in Southeast Asia, affecting countries such as Myanmar, Cambodia, and Thailand. These operations often lure individuals with false advertisements promising high-paying jobs, only to traffic them into secretive compounds. There, criminal groups force the victims to engage in online scams targeting victims globally, including those in China.

Both nations emphasized the urgency and necessity of enhancing collaborative efforts to tackle these crimes effectively. They agreed to engage in further discussions aimed at establishing robust coordination mechanisms for early detection and prevention. Additionally, the two countries plan to promote judicial cooperation among Lancang-Mekong nations to streamline their efforts against these illicit activities.

Reaffirming their commitment to regional peace and stability, China and Thailand also highlighted the importance of strengthening military exchanges, joint training programs, defense industry collaboration, capacity building, and technology transfer.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and Thailand. In their joint statement, both sides pledged to deepen cooperation in areas such as high-quality development, clean energy, the digital economy, and green growth. They aim to boost bilateral trade by expanding market access, promoting high-quality products, and enhancing e-commerce collaboration.

Furthermore, both countries underscored the significance of connectivity in driving regional economic integration and shared development. They agreed to intensify Belt and Road cooperation, including the China-Thailand railway project, to further enhance regional connectivity.
