The 2025 Spring Festival holiday, spanning from January 28 to February 4, witnessed a remarkable surge in tourism and consumer spending across the Chinese mainland.
According to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, a total of 501 million domestic trips were taken during the eight-day break, marking a 5.9% increase compared to the previous year. Domestic spending reached an impressive 677 billion yuan ($93 billion), reflecting a 7% year-on-year growth.
This noteworthy expansion can be attributed to this year's Spring Festival being the first since its inclusion in UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Cultural tourism thrived as museums became major attractions. Iconic institutions such as the Palace Museum in Beijing, the Shaanxi History Museum in the ancient city of Xi'an, and the Sanxingdui Museum in Guanghan City, Sichuan Province, experienced a significant influx of holidaymakers.
Traditional performances also captivated visitors, with spectacular light shows and evening cultural events taking center stage. In Huangshan City, an eastern city of the Chinese mainland, time-honored fish-shaped lanterns entertained travelers, while the traditional Yingge dance, or \"dance to the hero's song,\" drew many to explore the vibrant scenes in Shantou City, a southern city of the Chinese mainland.
