Mexico to Retaliate Against U.S. Tariffs, President Sheinbaum Announces

Mexico will retaliate against the tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump with its own tariffs and other measures, President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Saturday.

In a statement rejecting Washington's accusations that her government has alliances with drug trafficking groups, Sheinbaum called the claims \"slander.\" She emphasized that Mexico seeks collaboration and dialogue with its northern neighbor rather than confrontation.

\"We categorically reject the White House's slander that the Mexican government has alliances with criminal organizations, as well as any intention of meddling in our territory,\" Sheinbaum wrote in a lengthy post on X.

This announcement follows President Trump's signing of an order imposing tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada, and China. The move has escalated tensions between the countries, prompting Mexico and Canada to consider retaliatory measures.

The Mexican president, who has repeatedly sought to calm tensions with the United States, highlighted her government's efforts since taking office in October. These efforts include seizing 20 million doses of the synthetic opioid fentanyl and detaining over 100,000 individuals linked to drug trafficking.

In a related development, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Saturday that Canada would impose 25 percent tariffs on C$155 billion (US$106.5 billion) worth of U.S. goods in response to the U.S. tariffs. \"C$30 billion worth of goods will take effect on Tuesday, while C$125 billion will be implemented in 21 days,\" Trudeau told a news conference.

Both Mexico and Canada have expressed a desire to resolve the trade disputes through dialogue while standing firm against measures they view as unjustified.
