Half of U.S. Households Hold Only 2.4% of National Wealth, Federal Reserve Data Reveals

Recent data from the Federal Reserve highlights a stark wealth disparity in the United States. By the end of 2023, American households collectively reached a record net worth of $156.2 trillion. With approximately 130 million households, this averages to about $1.2 million per household.

However, a closer look reveals a different story. According to the Federal Reserve's 2022 analysis, the median net worth per household stands at just $192,000. This means that half of U.S. households have a net worth below this figure, illustrating a significant gap between the average and median wealth.

The official Weibo account of the U.S. Embassy in China recently cited these statistics to highlight the growing wealth inequality. The data suggests that half of American households hold only 2.4% of the nation's total wealth, underscoring the concentration of wealth among a small percentage of the population.

This disparity raises concerns about economic equity and the challenges faced by many American families. As wealth continues to consolidate among the affluent, discussions about wealth distribution, economic policies, and social support systems gain urgency both within the United States and globally.
