China Honors Shenzhou-18 Astronauts with Prestigious Medals

BEIJING – In a ceremony held on Thursday, the three astronauts of China's Shenzhou-18 mission were honored with prestigious medals for their significant contributions to the nation's space endeavors. Veteran astronaut Ye Guangfu received a second-class aerospace achievement medal, while his crewmates Li Cong and Li Guangsu were awarded third-class aerospace achievement medals and the honorary title of \"Heroic Astronaut.\"

The recognition was conferred by the Communist Party of China Central Committee, the State Council, and the Central Military Commission, highlighting the government's commitment to advancing the country's space exploration initiatives.

The Shenzhou-18 spacecraft was launched on April 25, 2024, marking Ye Guangfu's second journey to China's space station. Ye spent approximately six months aboard the station, making him the first Chinese astronaut to have lived in orbit for over a year, following his previous six-month mission during Shenzhou-13.

For Li Cong and Li Guangsu, Shenzhou-18 represented their inaugural spaceflight. Li Cong, the youngest member of the crew, excelled in his assignments, demonstrating exceptional skill and dedication. Li Guangsu made history by successfully installing the first space debris protection device on the space station during his first spacewalk, a critical advancement for orbital safety.

Throughout their 192-day mission, the crew conducted two extravehicular activities and executed nearly 100 space science experiments and in-orbit application payload tests. Their efforts have significantly expanded China's capabilities in space research and technology.

The Shenzhou-18 mission concluded when the trio safely returned to Earth on November 4, 2024, setting a new national record for the longest time spent in orbit by Chinese astronauts.

This mission not only reinforces China's growing presence in space exploration but also inspires a new generation of scientists and engineers dedicated to pushing the boundaries of human potential.
