In a significant move to steer China's development agenda, Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, chaired a meeting of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee on Monday. The meeting focused on reviewing important reports and charting the course for ecological protection and high-quality development in the Yellow River Basin.
The Political Bureau examined a report from its Standing Committee after discussing the work reports of the leading Party members' groups from the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, the State Council, the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the Supreme People's Court (SPC), and the Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP). Additionally, they reviewed the work report of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee.
The meeting acknowledged and appreciated the efforts of these leading Party members' groups over the past year, approving their work plans for 2025. Emphasizing the importance of getting things done, the meeting urged these groups to pool their strengths to push forward reforms and contribute to advancing high-quality development and the modernization of China.
A significant part of the meeting was dedicated to discussing ecological protection and high-quality development in the Yellow River Basin. The meeting called for the full enforcement of the Yellow River Protection Law, highlighting the river's critical role in China's ecological security and cultural heritage.
The attendees stressed the need to enhance water source conservation in the upper reaches of the Yellow River, strengthen soil and water conservation in the middle reaches, and advance wetland protection and ecological governance in the lower reaches. Efforts will also be made to ensure the safety of dams, reservoirs, and infrastructure along the river.
Furthermore, the meeting emphasized strengthening the synergy between the Yellow River's development and national strategies like the large-scale development of the western region and the rise of the central region. There was also a call to improve the protection of cultural heritage and promote the integration of culture and tourism development in the region.
The Secretariat was urged to boost political ability, strengthen strict self-governance, and accomplish all tasks entrusted by the CPC Central Committee.
