Beijing, October 16, 2023 — President Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, led a pivotal meeting of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee on Monday. The gathering focused on reviewing significant reports and setting the course for China's development in the upcoming year.
The meeting meticulously reviewed a report from the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee. It also examined work reports from the leading Party members' groups of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), the State Council, the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the Supreme People's Court (SPC), and the Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP). Additionally, the work report of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee was discussed.
High on the agenda was the comprehensive promotion of ecological protection and high-quality development in the Yellow River Basin. The meeting emphasized the crucial role of the Yellow River in China's ecological and economic landscape and underscored the need for sustainable practices.
The Political Bureau fully acknowledged the accomplishments of the leading Party members' groups over the past year. Their efforts were lauded, and their work plans for 2025 received approval. The meeting noted that in 2025, these groups must prioritize effective implementation of policies, galvanize reforms, and contribute significantly to advancing high-quality development and the realization of Chinese modernization.
The Secretariat was urged to enhance its political capabilities, enforce strict self-governance, and diligently accomplish all tasks entrusted by the CPC Central Committee.
Regarding the Yellow River Basin, the meeting highlighted the importance of promoting the full enforcement of the Yellow River Protection Law. It called for systematic efforts to enhance water source conservation in the upper reaches, strengthen soil and water conservation in the middle reaches, and advance wetland protection and ecological governance in the lower reaches.
The meeting also stressed the necessity of ensuring the safety of vital dams, reservoirs, and infrastructure. It advocated for strengthening the synergy between the Yellow River's high-quality development and the strategic initiatives for the large-scale development of the western region and the rise of the central region.
Furthermore, efforts to improve the holistic and systematic protection of cultural heritage were encouraged, alongside promoting the integration of culture and tourism development in the region.
