On Monday, Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, chaired a significant meeting of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee in Beijing. The high-level gathering focused on reviewing comprehensive work reports and discussing strategies for the ecological protection and high-quality development of the Yellow River Basin.
The meeting assessed the report from the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau after deliberating on the work reports submitted by the leading Party members' groups of various state organs. These included the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), the State Council, the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the Supreme People's Court (SPC), the Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP), and the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee.
The Political Bureau fully acknowledged the achievements of these leading Party members' groups over the past year and approved their work plans for 2025. Emphasizing the importance of progress, the meeting highlighted the need for these groups to prioritize efficiency, unite efforts to drive reforms, and make new contributions to China's high-quality development and modernization goals.
The Secretariat was urged to enhance its political capabilities, enforce strict self-governance, and effectively accomplish all tasks assigned by the CPC Central Committee.
A key focus of the meeting was the ecological protection and high-quality development of the Yellow River Basin. Recognizing the Yellow River's critical role in China's cultural heritage and economic development, the meeting called for the full enforcement of the Yellow River Protection Law.
Strategies discussed included enhancing water source conservation in the river's upper reaches, strengthening soil and water conservation in the middle reaches, and advancing wetland protection and ecological governance in the lower reaches. The meeting also stressed the importance of ensuring the safety of dams, reservoirs, and infrastructure along the river.
In addition, efforts to integrate the Yellow River's development with broader national strategies such as the large-scale development of the western region and the rise of the central region were emphasized. The meeting advocated for the holistic protection of cultural heritage and the promotion of integrated cultural and tourism development in the Yellow River Basin.
