Chinese Vice President Han Zheng Meets U.S. Business Leaders to Strengthen Bilateral Ties

Chinese Vice President Han Zheng met with representatives of the U.S. business community on Sunday, emphasizing the importance of continued investment and cooperation between China and the United States. Han expressed hopes that U.S. companies will “continue to invest and take root in China, play an active role as a bridge, and make a greater contribution to the steady, sound, and sustainable development of China-U.S. relations.”

The meeting in Washington D.C. included delegates from the U.S.-China Business Council and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Han is in the U.S. capital to attend the inauguration ceremony of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump as a special representative of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Han highlighted the recent phone conversation between President Xi and President-elect Trump, noting that the two leaders reached important common understandings regarding the development of China-U.S. relations. He underscored that both nations share broad common interests and vast potential for cooperation. “Getting the bilateral relationship off to a good start and keeping it growing steadily serve the common well-being of the peoples of the two countries and meet the expectations of the international community,” Han stated.

Praising the U.S. business community as the backbone of China-U.S. relations, Han called them participants, witnesses, contributors, and beneficiaries of bilateral economic and trade cooperation, as well as China’s reform and opening-up efforts. He assured that China will “unswervingly advance its reform and opening-up efforts and continue to improve its business environment.”

Representatives of the U.S. business community responded positively, expressing optimism about China’s economic prospects and the opportunities for development. They noted that the recent phone conversation between Trump and Xi sent a positive and encouraging message. As the world’s two most dynamic and technologically advanced economies, they emphasized that the U.S. and China should pursue mutually beneficial cooperation and work towards a constructive and stable coexistence.

The business leaders voiced support for strengthening dialogue and communication to continue advancing bilateral relations and economic and trade cooperation.

On the same day, Vice President Han also met with Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Han welcomed U.S. companies, including Tesla, to “seize the opportunity to share in the fruits of China’s development and make greater contributions to promoting China-U.S. economic and trade relations.” Musk expressed readiness for Tesla to deepen its investment and cooperation with China, and to play an active role in promoting economic and trade exchanges between the two countries.
