China has reaffirmed its openness to communication with the European Union on intellectual property issues, following the EU’s recent complaint lodged at the World Trade Organization (WTO). On Monday, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce stated that channels of dialogue with the EU remain “always open.”
The EU filed a complaint with the WTO on the same day, challenging China’s judicial rulings on standard essential patent disputes. The dispute centers around allegations concerning China’s handling of patent protections.
In an online statement responding to media inquiries, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce acknowledged receipt of the EU’s consultation request on January 20. The ministry emphasized China’s commitment to the WTO framework, stating that the country “has adhered strictly to WTO rules and its accession commitments.”
“China has continually improved legislation and law enforcement related to the protection of intellectual property rights, and its achievements have been widely recognized,” the ministry added.
Addressing the WTO proceedings, the ministry affirmed that China will handle subsequent matters in accordance with WTO rules. “We will firmly safeguard our legitimate rights and interests,” the statement concluded.
This development highlights the ongoing dialogue between two major global trade partners. The resolution of such disputes is crucial for maintaining a stable international trade environment, impacting businesses and investors worldwide.
