Beijing, China — In a significant move to steer China’s future development, President Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, chaired a meeting of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee on Monday. The meeting focused on reviewing critical reports and discussing strategies for ecological protection and high-quality development, particularly in the Yellow River Basin.
The meeting reviewed a comprehensive report from the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau after it analyzed the work reports of leading Party members’ groups from key state institutions. These included the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), the State Council, the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the Supreme People’s Court (SPC), the Supreme People’s Procuratorate (SPP), and the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee.
One of the central topics was the promotion of ecological protection and high-quality development in the Yellow River Basin. The meeting underscored the importance of fully enforcing the Yellow River Protection Law and called for coordinated efforts to enhance water conservation in the upper reaches, strengthen soil and water conservation in the middle reaches, and improve wetland protection and ecological management in the lower reaches.
The Political Bureau fully acknowledged the achievements of the leading Party members’ groups over the past year and approved their work plans for 2025. Emphasis was placed on prioritizing actionable objectives, pooling collective strength to advance reforms, and contributing to China’s high-quality development and modernization efforts.
“The leading Party members’ groups of the five state institutions must make it a priority to get things done,” the meeting noted. The Secretariat was also urged to bolster political capabilities, enforce strict self-governance, and effectively accomplish all tasks entrusted by the CPC Central Committee.
The meeting highlighted the need to ensure the safety of critical infrastructure such as dams and reservoirs. It also focused on aligning the Yellow River’s high-quality development with broader national strategies, including the large-scale development of the western region and the rise of the central region. Efforts to protect cultural heritage holistically and promote the integration of culture and tourism were also discussed.
This meeting signifies a strong commitment by China’s leadership to balance ecological preservation with economic growth, ensuring sustainable development for the regions surrounding the Yellow River, often referred to as the “Mother River” of China.
