BEIJING — In a pivotal meeting on Monday, Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, chaired a session of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee to review crucial reports and outline strategic plans for the nation’s future development.

The meeting focused on assessing the work reports from the leading Party members’ groups of key state institutions, including the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), the State Council, the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the Supreme People’s Court (SPC), and the Supreme People’s Procuratorate (SPP). The work report of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee was also reviewed.

Recognizing significant achievements over the past year, the meeting approved the work plans for 2025 submitted by these bodies. Emphasis was placed on prioritizing action, consolidating efforts to advance reforms, and contributing to high-quality development and Chinese modernization.

The meeting highlighted the imperative of enhancing the political capabilities of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee and strengthening strict self-governance to effectively carry out the tasks entrusted by the CPC Central Committee.

A notable focus of the session was the comprehensive promotion of ecological protection and high-quality development in the Yellow River Basin. Stressing the importance of the Yellow River Protection Law, the meeting called for its full enforcement to safeguard this critical region.

Strategies were outlined to systematically enhance water source conservation in the upper reaches, strengthen soil and water conservation in the middle reaches, and advance wetland protection and ecological governance in the lower reaches of the Yellow River. These measures aim to ensure the sustainable management of the river’s ecosystem.

The meeting also underscored the necessity of ensuring the safety of vital dams, reservoirs, and infrastructure. It called for strengthening the synergy between the Yellow River’s development initiatives and broader national strategies, such as the large-scale development of the western region and the rise of the central region.

Additionally, there was a call to improve the holistic and systematic protection of cultural heritage along the Yellow River and to promote the integration of culture and tourism development, enhancing the region’s cultural vitality and economic prosperity.
