Chinese Vice President Han Zheng expressed hope on Sunday that U.S. companies will continue to invest and establish deeper roots in the Chinese mainland, playing an active role as a bridge to contribute to the steady, sound, and sustainable development of China-U.S. relations.
Han made these remarks while meeting with representatives of the U.S. business community, including members from the U.S.-China Business Council and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, in Washington D.C. He is in the U.S. capital to attend the inauguration ceremony of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on Monday as Chinese President Xi Jinping’s special representative.
During the meeting, Han noted that President Xi and President-elect Trump recently reached important common understandings regarding the development of China-U.S. relations during a phone call. Han emphasized that China and the United States share broad common interests and vast potential for cooperation. He stated that getting the bilateral relationship off to a good start and maintaining steady growth serves the common well-being of the peoples of both countries and meets the expectations of the international community.
Han highlighted that the U.S. business community has always been the backbone of China-U.S. relations, serving as participants, witnesses, contributors, and beneficiaries of bilateral economic and trade cooperation as well as China’s reform and opening-up efforts. He assured that China will continue to advance its reform and opening-up initiatives and strive to improve its business environment.
Representatives of the U.S. business community expressed optimism about China’s economic prospects and the opportunities for development. They acknowledged that the recent phone conversation between Trump and Xi sent a positive and encouraging message. As the world’s two most dynamic and technologically advanced economies, they noted that the U.S. and China should pursue mutually beneficial cooperation and work towards finding a constructive and stable way to coexist.
The U.S. business leaders affirmed their support for strengthening U.S.-China dialogue and communication to continue advancing bilateral relations and economic and trade cooperation.
On Sunday, Han also met with Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Han welcomed U.S. companies, including Tesla, to seize the opportunities presented by China’s development. He encouraged them to share in the fruits of this progress and make greater contributions to promoting China-U.S. economic and trade relations.
Musk expressed enthusiasm for deepening Tesla’s investment and cooperation with China. He emphasized the company’s readiness to play an active role in promoting economic and trade exchanges between the U.S. and China.
