Chinese Vice President Han Zheng met with U.S. business leaders on Sunday in Washington D.C., emphasizing the importance of strengthening China-U.S. relations through continued economic cooperation. Han expressed hope that U.S. companies will continue to invest and establish deeper roots in China, playing an active role as a bridge between the two nations and contributing to the steady, sound, and sustainable development of bilateral ties.
Han made these remarks during meetings with representatives from the U.S.-China Business Council and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. He is visiting Washington D.C. as Chinese President Xi Jinping’s special representative to attend the inauguration ceremony of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on Monday, at the invitation of the United States.
During the discussions, Han noted that President Xi and President-elect Trump recently had a phone conversation in which they reached important common understandings regarding the development of China-U.S. relations. Han underscored that China and the United States share broad common interests and have vast potential for cooperation. He stressed that getting the bilateral relationship off to a good start and keeping it growing steadily serves the well-being of both peoples and meets the expectations of the international community.
Han highlighted the pivotal role of the U.S. business community in China-U.S. relations, calling it a participant, witness, contributor, and beneficiary of bilateral economic and trade cooperation as well as China’s reform and opening-up efforts. He assured that China will steadfastly advance its reform and opening-up initiatives and continue to improve its business environment.
Representatives of the U.S. business community conveyed optimism about China’s economic prospects and opportunities for development. They noted that the recent phone conversation between Trump and Xi sent a positive, encouraging message. As the world’s two most dynamic and technologically advanced economies, the United States and China should pursue mutually beneficial cooperation and work towards finding a constructive and stable way to coexist, they remarked. They expressed support for strengthening dialogue and communication to continue advancing bilateral relations and economic and trade cooperation.
In addition to meeting with business leaders, Han also met with Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Han welcomed U.S. companies, including Tesla, to seize the opportunity to share in the fruits of China’s development and make greater contributions to promoting China-U.S. economic and trade relations. Musk indicated that Tesla is ready to deepen its investment and cooperation with China and play an active role in promoting economic and trade exchanges between the two countries.
