Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, chaired a significant meeting of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee on Monday. The gathering focused on reviewing reports from key state institutions and mapping out strategic plans for 2025, with a notable emphasis on ecological protection and high-quality development in the Yellow River Basin.
The meeting acknowledged the diligent work accomplished over the past year by the leading Party members’ groups of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), the State Council, the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the Supreme People’s Court (SPC), the Supreme People’s Procuratorate (SPP), and the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee. Their work plans for 2025 received approval, setting the stage for concerted efforts toward Chinese modernization.
During the discussions, Xi Jinping emphasized the necessity for these leading groups to prioritize action, foster reform, and contribute meaningfully to advancing high-quality development and the nation’s modernization goals in 2025.
The meeting also highlighted the importance of strengthening the Secretariat’s political capabilities and commitment to strict self-governance, ensuring that all tasks entrusted by the CPC Central Committee are effectively executed.
A key focus of the meeting was the ecological protection and high-quality development of the Yellow River Basin. Recognized as the “Mother River” of China, the Yellow River holds immense cultural and ecological significance. The Political Bureau called for full enforcement of the Yellow River Protection Law, aiming to safeguard and revitalize this vital waterway.
Specific initiatives were outlined to enhance water source conservation in the river’s upper reaches, strengthen soil and water conservation in the middle reaches, and advance wetland protection and ecological governance in the lower reaches. Efforts will also be made to ensure the safety of critical infrastructure, such as dams and reservoirs.
The meeting underscored the need to align the Yellow River’s high-quality development with broader national strategies, including the large-scale development of the western region and the rise of the central region. Enhancing the protection of cultural heritage along the river and promoting the integration of culture and tourism were also emphasized.
By addressing these priorities, the CPC Central Committee aims to promote sustainable development, ecological balance, and cultural prosperity, reinforcing the Yellow River Basin’s role in China’s ongoing journey toward modernization.
