China-Norway Duo Explores Harbin in ‘People of the North: Harbin Special’

In early 2024, CGTN’s popular food vlogger Shanny teamed up with renowned Norwegian TV hosts Arne Hjeltnes and Stig Bareksten to explore the enchanting city of Harbin in the documentary “The People of the North: Harbin Special“.

Their journey began at Harbin’s bustling morning markets, where the trio immersed themselves in the local culture, sampling fresh produce and engaging with friendly vendors. Strolling down the historic Central Street, they marveled at the blend of European and Chinese architecture that tells the story of Harbin’s rich past.

One of the highlights of their adventure was learning to cook Guo Bao Rou, Harbin’s famous sweet and sour pork dish. Under the guidance of local chefs, they discovered the secrets behind this culinary delight that perfectly balances crispy textures with tangy flavors.

Venturing beyond the city, Shanny, Arne, and Stig traveled northeast to Mulan County. There, they joined villagers in dancing the traditional “Yangko,” a folk dance full of life and color. The warmth of the local community was palpable as they rolled up their sleeves to make dumplings, sharing laughter and stories over the cherished meal.

The Norwegian hosts were captivated not only by Harbin’s cuisine but also by its breathtaking winter scenery. From the glittering ice sculptures to the snow-laden landscapes, Harbin’s unique charm left an indelible impression on them.

As winter approaches, Harbin once again beckons visitors from around the globe with its icy allure. Join this China-Norway duo on their journey and experience the magic of China’s “Ice City” through their eyes.
