Sri Lanka is poised to become a new hotspot for regional tourism and investment with the construction of a state-of-the-art marina in Port City Colombo. Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath announced on Friday that the new development will serve as a significant platform to attract foreign investment and elevate the nation’s international profile.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Minister Herath emphasized the marina’s potential to fill a critical gap in high-end maritime services in South Asia. “The development of this marina is not just about infrastructure; it’s about positioning Sri Lanka as a premier destination for high-net-worth tourists and investors,” he said. “It will pave the way for enhanced cultural and economic cooperation, particularly between Sri Lanka and China, helping us achieve our tourism revenue goals.”
The marina is set to cover an area of approximately 20,400 square meters, with a construction area totaling about 49,000 square meters. This ambitious project is expected to provide top-tier facilities for luxury yachts and vessels, further solidifying Sri Lanka’s place on the global maritime map.
Harsha Amarasekera, chairman of the Colombo Port City Economic Commission, highlighted the economic benefits of the project. “The commencement of this new development will inject fresh impetus into Sri Lanka’s economy,” he stated. “Not only will it create numerous employment opportunities, but it will also attract international high-end brands to our shores, significantly contributing to our economic recovery.”
The Port City Colombo project, of which the marina is a pivotal component, represents a transformative initiative for Sri Lanka’s future. It aims to establish Colombo as a leading city in South Asia, fostering innovation, business, and tourism. The marina’s construction marks a milestone in this vision, signaling Sri Lanka’s commitment to sustainable and inclusive growth.
As the country looks to the future, developments like the Port City marina are set to play a crucial role in driving economic prosperity and enhancing Sri Lanka’s standing on the world stage.
