Harbin Gears Up for Spectacular Asian Winter Games Opening Ceremony

Harbin, in northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province, is bustling with excitement as it prepares for the much-anticipated ninth Asian Winter Games, set to commence on February 7. With less than a month to go, chief director Sha Xiaolan promises a spectacular opening ceremony that will captivate audiences across Asia.

“The overall progress has been very smooth,” Sha told China Media Group (CMG). “We started rehearsals for individual segments at the main venue in December, and I’m pleased to say that this phase has been successfully completed.”

Renowned for orchestrating the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, Sha and his creative team aim to replicate their previous success at the Asian Winter Games. Their vision is to present a “simple, yet spectacular and safe” ceremony that embodies the event’s theme: “Dream of Winter, Love among Asia.”

“Iconic landmarks of Harbin, such as Central Avenue, Ice and Snow World, and Music Square, have left a profound impression on our creative team,” Sha revealed. “These elements will be woven into the fabric of the opening ceremony, serving as both our aesthetic inspiration and foundation, thereby showcasing the enchanting charm of Harbin.”

A record number of 1,275 athletes from 34 countries and regions have registered for Harbin 2025, including debut participants Cambodia and Saudi Arabia. This unprecedented turnout underscores the growing appeal of winter sports across Asia and sets the stage for what may be the most attended Asian Winter Games in history.

As Harbin finalizes preparations, anticipation builds among sports enthusiasts, athletes, and visitors alike. The city stands ready to deliver an unforgettable experience that celebrates athletic excellence and fosters unity among Asian nations.
