UCCA Clay Opens in China’s ‘City of Ceramics,’ Bridging Tradition and Innovation

On October 19, UCCA Clay opened its doors in Yixing, acclaimed as China’s “City of Ceramics.” The inaugural exhibition, “The Ways of Clay,” celebrates Yixing’s 7,000-year-old ceramic heritage by uniting it with contemporary artistic expressions.

Designed by renowned architect Kengo Kuma, the museum’s terracotta facade draws inspiration from ancient dragon kilns, symbolizing a fusion of tradition and modernity. The structure stands as a testament to Yixing’s rich history while embracing innovative architectural design.

As the fourth addition to UCCA’s network of museums in China, UCCA Clay aims to connect local and international audiences with the dynamic world of ceramic art. Situated in Jiangsu Province, the institution serves as a cultural bridge, offering fresh perspectives on an ancient art form.

UCCA Clay’s opening marks a significant moment for both Yixing and the global art community. By fostering dialogues between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary art, the museum hopes to invigorate interest in ceramics and highlight its enduring relevance in today’s artistic landscape.
