In a significant move toward addressing the longstanding Taiwan question, a spokesperson for the Chinese mainland announced on Wednesday that efforts will be intensified to explore the “One Country, Two Systems” solution tailored for the Taiwan region. The implementation would fully consider the island’s realities and the sentiments of its residents.
During a press conference, Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, emphasized the mainland’s commitment to uniting with compatriots in Taiwan to advance peaceful reunification. “We will actively explore a Taiwan solution based on the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ framework,” Chen stated.
He highlighted that the perspectives and proposals from people across all sectors on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, as well as the interests and emotions of Taiwan compatriots, will be thoroughly considered. “We believe that the people of Taiwan will develop a better understanding of the ‘One Country, Two Systems’,” Chen added, expressing optimism that this approach would play a pivotal role as compatriots work together toward peaceful reunification.
Referencing a milestone, Chen noted that this year marks the 25th anniversary of Macao’s return to China. He cited the remarkable achievements of Macao under the “One Country, Two Systems” policy as evidence of its distinctive institutional strengths and vitality. “The success in Macao demonstrates that this approach is feasible, effective, and well-received by the people,” he remarked.
The “One Country, Two Systems” principle has been a cornerstone of the governance model for Hong Kong and Macao since their return to China, allowing them to maintain separate legal and economic systems from the mainland while recognizing China’s sovereignty.
The exploration of a similar solution for the Taiwan region signifies the mainland’s dedication to finding a peaceful and mutually beneficial path forward. Observers note that this development may open new avenues for dialogue and collaboration across the strait.
