China and Italy Reaffirm Commitment to Enhanced Collaboration at Milan Event

In a significant move to bolster bilateral ties, Chinese and Italian officials, along with business leaders, gathered in Milan on Friday to reaffirm their commitment to deeper collaboration and mutual prosperity. The occasion was marked by the launch of the 2024 Development Report on Chinese Enterprises in Italy, a comprehensive study highlighting the contributions and challenges of Chinese businesses operating in Italy.

Yan Dong, president of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Italy (CCCIT), delivered a keynote address emphasizing the pivotal role of Chinese enterprises in Italy’s economic landscape. “Despite facing challenges such as protectionist policies and regulatory constraints, Chinese businesses have significantly contributed to Italy’s investment, taxation, and employment,” Yan stated. He expressed hope that the report would enhance mutual understanding and foster deeper bilateral cooperation. “We believe this in-depth analysis of key areas like employment, operations, and regulatory challenges will lead to improvements in Italy’s business environment,” he added.

The report, based on survey data from 92 member companies, is the first of its kind to provide a comprehensive examination of the operational status, contributions, and hurdles faced by Chinese enterprises in Italy. It serves as a valuable resource for policymakers and business leaders seeking to strengthen economic ties between the two nations.

Liu Kan, the Chinese Consul General in Milan, praised the report’s insights and reaffirmed China’s commitment to peaceful development and mutual prosperity. “China stands ready to share its development opportunities with Italy and the world, safeguard global free trade, and ensure the stability of industrial and supply chains,” Liu remarked.

On the Italian side, Andrea Tabella from the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy, reiterated the ministry’s dedication to fostering stronger collaboration with the CCCIT. “We believe this report will be a helpful guide for Chinese enterprises in Italy and unlock new opportunities for mutual growth,” Tabella said.

Raffaele Cattaneo, secretary general of the Lombardy Region, highlighted the region’s strategic importance in China-Italy economic relations. “Lombardy attracts over 50 percent of Chinese investments in Italy, and more than 60 percent of surveyed companies plan to expand their investments here over the next three years,” Cattaneo noted, underscoring the region’s appeal to foreign businesses.

Established in 2021, the CCCIT is the sole officially recognized organization representing Chinese enterprises in Italy, with over 120 members spanning sectors such as finance, telecommunications, technology, and manufacturing.

The launch event drew approximately 150 participants, including representatives from Chinese and Italian businesses, trade associations, and government institutions, symbolizing a collective commitment to strengthening economic partnerships.
