In a challenging second match at the Next Gen ATP Finals in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, China’s rising star Shang Juncheng suffered his second consecutive defeat, falling to American Nishesh Basavareddy with scores of 3-4(4), 4-2, 4-2, 4-1.
The 19-year-old Shang, ranked World No. 50, began the match strong on Thursday, clinching the first set 4-3 in a tense tie-breaker. Demonstrating his agility and skill, he showed promise against the World No. 138 Basavareddy. However, the American swiftly turned the tables in the second set, securing it 4-2 and gaining momentum.
Basavareddy continued his assertive play, taking the third set 4-2. Despite Shang’s efforts to regain control, Basavareddy maintained his lead, ultimately sealing the match with a 4-1 win in the fourth set. This victory marks Basavareddy’s first career ATP Tour win and places him at 1-1 in the Red Group.
Reflecting on his performance, Shang, seeded fourth in the tournament, acknowledged the challenges faced. “It was a tough match,” he noted. “I’ll learn from this experience and come back stronger in the next game.”
Basavareddy expressed his excitement over the win, stating, “It’s incredible to secure my first ATP Tour victory here. Shang is a formidable opponent, and this match was a great test.”
Looking ahead, Basavareddy will face sixth seed Luca Van Assche on Friday, aiming to secure a spot in the semifinals. Shang will meet American Alex Michelsen, who leads the group with a 2-0 record and has already qualified for the last four.
