Shanghai Unveils One-Stop Service Center to Boost Used Car Exports

Shanghai has taken a significant step to streamline its used car export industry by opening China's first in-port used car export inspection point. The new Shanghai Port Used Car Export Comprehensive Service Center, launched on Wednesday, aims to make the export process more efficient and cost-effective for businesses.

The center offers one-stop services that integrate vehicle registration and port logistics, catering to used car export enterprises not only in Shanghai but also in surrounding provinces. By centralizing these services, the center is expected to reduce both transportation costs and processing time.

“The establishment of the service center will significantly improve the capital turnover rate and time efficiency for used car export enterprises,” said Zhang Wen, general manager of Shanghai Leiyin Car Service Co., Ltd., in an interview with local media Shanghai Observer. Zhang explained that previously, used cars had to be transported to a vehicle management office within Shanghai for transfer procedures before heading to the port. The new center streamlines this process, allowing for a more seamless export experience.

China's used car export industry has been on the rise since the government launched a pilot program in 2019 across ten cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, and Qingdao. The program expanded nationwide in March, leading to rapid growth. In 2023 alone, China exported 275,000 used cars, generating revenue of $6.88 billion, according to data from the Ministry of Commerce.

As one of the initial pilot cities, Shanghai has witnessed growing demand in the used car export market. The Shanghai municipal government has introduced a series of supportive measures to optimize the export process further. These initiatives aim to enhance the city's international business environment, emphasizing law-based governance and convenience for enterprises.

The launch of the service center not only reflects Shanghai's commitment to facilitating trade but also underscores China's broader efforts to bolster its economy through expanded exports. For global buyers and investors, this development signals new opportunities within the Asian automotive market.
