Ismail Haniyeh, Hamas Leader, Killed in Tehran Attack

In a shocking development, Hamas politburo chief Ismail Haniyeh has been killed in Tehran, as confirmed by Hamas and Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) in separate statements early on Wednesday.

Haniyeh was in the Iranian capital attending the swearing-in ceremony of Iran’s new president on Tuesday. The tragic incident occurred when his residence in Tehran was struck, resulting in his death and that of one of his bodyguards.

“Early this morning, the residence of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran was struck, resulting in his and one of his bodyguards’ martyrdom. The cause is under investigation and will be announced soon,” the IRGC stated.

A Hamas official denounced the assassination as a “grave escalation” and asserted that it would not achieve its intended objectives, according to a Reuters report.

Ismail Haniyeh, a prominent figure in Palestinian politics, had been leading Hamas’s political bureau since 2017. His death marks a significant moment in Middle Eastern affairs, with potential repercussions for regional dynamics.
