China’s Vice President Han Zheng has announced that China is eager to deepen and expand high-level cooperation with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as the country prepares to host the Asian Winter Games next year. Han made these remarks during a meeting with IOC President Thomas Bach in Paris on Saturday.
Han, serving as the special representative of President Xi Jinping, conveyed President Xi’s cordial greetings to Bach. He also congratulated the IOC on the success of the splendid opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
“The Olympic Movement aims to safeguard world peace and promote the unity of humankind,” Han stated, emphasizing that the upcoming Paris Olympics holds great significance in promoting Olympism amidst the current international climate. He highlighted China’s steadfast support for the development of the international Olympic Movement and its longstanding positive relationship with the IOC.
Bach expressed his sincere regards to President Xi through Han and warmly welcomed Han’s participation in the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics as President Xi’s special representative. “The cause of international Olympics is fundamentally based on multilateralism,” Bach noted.
He praised China’s support for international Olympics, acknowledging that the success of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics during the COVID-19 pandemic set an example for countries worldwide in hosting successful Olympic Games. Bach affirmed the IOC’s willingness to continue close cooperation with China to successfully organize various international sports events and promote the values of Olympism.
