The Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) has lauded the election of the region’s sixth-term chief executive as “pioneering and emblematic.” On Sunday, the office extended its congratulations to Sam Hou Fai, the newly elected chief executive designate of the Macao SAR.
This election marks the first since amendments to the Chief Executive Election Law took effect earlier this year, effectively implementing the principle of “patriots administering Macao.” The Liaison Office praised the election process as “open, fair, and just,” highlighting the efficient organization by the Electoral Affairs Commission, the lawful campaigning by the candidate, and the active participation of electoral commission members and Macao residents.
An official from the Liaison Office stated that the smooth and successful election is a testament to the full and accurate implementation of the “One Country, Two Systems” principle in Macao, where the people administer the region with a high degree of autonomy. The official emphasized that the election has effectively safeguarded constitutional order in the Macao SAR, as stipulated in China’s Constitution and the Basic Law of the Macao SAR.
Expressing confidence in Sam Hou Fai’s leadership, the official voiced optimism that the new chief executive designate will unite and lead the new government and the people of Macao to “forge ahead with determination,” pursue innovation, and continue to create new chapters in the successful practice of the “One Country, Two Systems” principle with Macao characteristics.
The Liaison Office also pledged to continue fulfilling its duties entrusted by the central government and to support the chief executive and the Macao SAR government in their lawful administration.
As prescribed in the Basic Law of the Macao SAR, the region’s chief executive is elected by a broadly representative Chief Executive Election Committee and is then appointed by the Central People’s Government.
The successful election underscores Macao’s commitment to its unique administrative approach under the “One Country, Two Systems” framework, setting a precedent for future governance and strengthening the region’s integration with the Chinese mainland.
