Wang Yi Advocates for Sustainable China-ASEAN Relations in Beijing Meeting

In a significant move to bolster regional stability and development, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with diplomatic envoys from the 10 Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries in Beijing on Thursday.

Wang Yi, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, emphasized the enduring friendship and partnership between China and ASEAN. “China and ASEAN are not just neighbors but good friends and partners,” Wang stated, highlighting the mutual contributions to regional peace and prosperity.

He reaffirmed China’s commitment to working closely with ASEAN nations to maintain the momentum of sound and sustainable development in their relations. “China will continue to firmly support ASEAN’s centrality,” Wang added, underscoring the importance of ASEAN’s role in regional affairs.

Addressing the need for multilateral cooperation, Wang Yi noted China’s advocacy for true multilateralism. “We aim to promote an equal and orderly multipolar world and inclusive economic globalization that benefits all,” he said. He called on ASEAN countries to join efforts in building a more just and reasonable global governance system.

Wang Yi also invited ASEAN nations to seize new opportunities presented by China’s development. “Together, we can achieve modernization in Asia and contribute to the world,” he remarked.

The diplomatic envoys from ASEAN countries acknowledged the significance of this year, marking important milestones in their diplomatic ties with China. They expressed eagerness to unlock the potential for bilateral cooperation in various fields, including economy, trade and investment, connectivity, the digital economy, green transformation, and sustainable development.

Highlighting the cultural dimension, the envoys emphasized the importance of the Year of People-to-People Exchanges. They expressed their commitment to advancing ASEAN-China relations and elevating bilateral ties to new heights.
