Chinese Striker Wu Lei to Undergo Knee Surgery, Out for Two Months

Chinese striker Wu Lei is set to undergo knee surgery that will sideline him for at least two months, affecting both his club commitments with Shanghai Port and his participation in China’s upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Wu, who has been struggling with a right knee issue, missed China’s last two 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches—a 1-0 away victory against Bahrain and a 3-1 home defeat to Japan in November.

The persistent injury also led to his exclusion from the national team’s current training camp in Haikou, located in south China’s Hainan Province. Despite initially opting for conservative treatment methods, the 28-year-old forward acknowledged that surgery is now the only viable option.

“The problem will not go away completely without an operation,” Wu told reporters. “It’s very disturbing. If I don’t have an operation, it will get worse than last year.”

Wu is currently in discussions with his club, Shanghai Port, regarding the surgical procedure and his post-operative rehabilitation plan. The anticipated recovery period means he will be absent from the pitch for at least two months.

As a result, Wu will miss China’s next two crucial World Cup qualifiers, scheduled for March 20 against Saudi Arabia and on March 25 against Australia. His absence is a significant blow to the national team, which relies on his experience and goal-scoring abilities.

Wu Lei’s commitment to resolving his injury reflects his dedication to both his club and country. Fans and teammates alike will be eagerly awaiting his return to full fitness ahead of future international fixtures.
