Xinjiang’s New Energy Power Generation Soars Over 30% in 2024

In 2024, northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region witnessed a remarkable surge in new energy power generation, reaching 116.16 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh), a significant increase of 30.7 percent over the previous year.

The substantial growth in new energy power generation accounted for over 80 percent of the total increase in the region’s power generation. Both the volume and proportion of new energy power generation continued to rise, indicating Xinjiang’s accelerating shift towards renewable energy sources, according to the State Grid Xinjiang Electric Power Co., Ltd.

Photovoltaic power generation experienced an impressive year-on-year surge of 65.7 percent, totaling 40.77 billion kWh. Wind power generation also saw a considerable increase, reaching 75.39 billion kWh, up 17.3 percent compared to the previous year.

China has committed to achieving carbon peak by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060. Xinjiang, abundant in solar and wind energy resources, has been at the forefront of this green transition. In recent years, the region has vigorously developed its new energy industry, accelerating the construction of large-scale wind and photovoltaic power base projects.

The continuous expansion of new energy generation in Xinjiang not only contributes to China’s national environmental goals but also showcases the region’s potential as a significant hub for renewable energy in Asia. The advancements in Xinjiang’s energy sector are expected to attract more investment and foster sustainable economic growth in the region.
