Barcelona Reach Spanish Super Cup Final with 2-0 Victory over Athletic Bilbao

Jeddah, October 18 — Barcelona secured their place in the Spanish Super Cup final for the third consecutive year with a commanding 2-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday. Goals from youngsters Gavi and Lamine Yamal propelled the Catalan giants to a deserved win at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah.

The match began with Barcelona asserting early dominance. Raphinha posed an immediate threat, first sending an acrobatic volley over the bar and then forcing a save from goalkeeper Unai Simon with a powerful free-kick. The breakthrough came in the 17th minute when Pedri threaded a pass to Alejandro Balde on the wing. Balde delivered a precise low cross into the box, finding Gavi who calmly slotted the ball between Simon’s legs from close range.

Barcelona continued to press for a second goal. Raphinha was sent through on goal by the impressive Yamal but shot straight at Simon. Athletic Bilbao began to find their footing towards the end of the first half. Wojciech Szczesny, guarding the Barcelona net, was alert to cut out Yuri Berchiche’s dangerous low cross and later denied Inaki Williams with a crucial save just before halftime.

Lamine Yamal, returning from an ankle injury that sidelined him for two games, showcased why manager Hansi Flick trusted him to start. In the 52nd minute, Gavi turned provider with a delightful forward pass to Yamal. The young winger controlled the ball expertly on the turn, surged into the penalty area, and coolly finished past Simon to double Barcelona’s lead.

Athletic Bilbao introduced Nico Williams in an effort to spark a comeback. The best opportunity fell to his brother, Inaki Williams, who unfortunately dragged his shot wide from a promising position. Late in the game, Oscar de Marcos and Inaki Williams both found the back of the net, but their efforts were ruled out for offside.

Barcelona’s victory was comprehensive and well-earned. The team now awaits the winner of Thursday’s semifinal between holders Real Madrid and Mallorca, setting up an exciting final on Sunday.

In a boost for Barcelona, Spain’s National Sports Council (CSD) granted provisional registration for Dani Olmo and Pau Victor on Wednesday. While the decision came too late for them to feature against Athletic Bilbao, both players will be available for selection in the final.

Barcelona, the most successful club in Spanish Super Cup history with 14 titles, will be eager to add another trophy to their collection. Fans around the world will be watching as they attempt to continue their dominance in this prestigious competition.
