Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi began his Africa visit on Sunday, continuing a 35-year tradition of Chinese foreign ministers starting the year with a trip to the continent. This practice underscores China’s enduring commitment to strengthening its ties with Africa.
From January 5 to 11, Wang Yi is scheduled to visit four countries, including the Republic of the Congo.
The 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and the Republic of the Congo was marked in 2024. Bilateral trade reached $6.57 billion in 2022, reflecting a 22 percent year-on-year increase. The relationship reached new heights in 2024 with the signing of a cooperation plan to jointly advance the Belt and Road Initiative. This builds on a memorandum of understanding signed in 2018, solidifying a deep and strategic partnership.
Wang Yi’s visit is expected to inject new momentum into the already flourishing relationship, opening up opportunities for further cooperation in various sectors, including trade, investment, and cultural exchange. Observers note that this visit reaffirms China’s commitment to mutual development and prosperity with its African partners.
