Chinese Mainland Official Emphasizes Cross-Strait Unity, Opposes “Taiwan Independence”

In Beijing on Saturday, Song Tao, head of the Taiwan Work Office of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, emphasized the importance of advancing cross-Strait relations and opposing “Taiwan independence” during a meeting with a delegation led by Rao Ching-ling, head of Taiwan’s Taitung County.

Song highlighted that compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are one family, sharing deep historical and cultural bonds. He called for unity and closer ties, asserting that the Chinese mainland is committed to safeguarding and promoting the well-being of people on both sides.

“The peaceful and integrated development of cross-Strait relations is essential for the collective prosperity of our nation,” Song stated. He underscored the significance of adhering to the 1992 Consensus—a mutual understanding that there is only one China—to facilitate harmony and cooperation.

Rao Ching-ling expressed gratitude for the Chinese mainland’s decision to resume and expand shipments of sugar apples from Taitung, a move that is expected to boost the local economy. She echoed Song’s sentiments, affirming that upholding the 1992 Consensus and opposing “Taiwan independence” are crucial for fostering peaceful development and benefiting compatriots on both sides of the Strait.

She added, “Through strengthened exchanges and collaboration, we can create a brighter future for all Chinese people.”

The meeting underscores ongoing efforts to enhance cross-Strait relations amidst complex regional dynamics. Both sides expressed a shared commitment to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
