Shanghai, China—Tesla’s Shanghai energy storage Megafactory has commenced trial production, marking a significant milestone in Sino-U.S. cooperation to tackle global climate challenges. The U.S. carmaker’s new plant is dedicated to manufacturing Megapacks, Tesla’s large-scale energy storage batteries.
According to Tesla China, mass production is anticipated to fully begin in the first quarter of 2025. The facility boasts an initial annual production capacity of 10,000 units, equating to approximately 40 gigawatt-hours of energy storage. This substantial output underscores Tesla’s commitment to advancing renewable energy solutions and its confidence in China’s robust manufacturing capabilities.
“The project is Tesla’s second plant in Shanghai, highlighting the strengthened economic ties between China and the United States in the new energy sector,” said Wu Qisheng, a researcher at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences. “It exemplifies how collaborative efforts can accelerate advancements in clean energy technologies.”
Covering an area of about 200,000 square meters, the new Megafactory represents a total investment of approximately 1.45 billion yuan (about $198.7 million). The facility is located in the Lin-gang Special Area of the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone, a hub designed to enhance international trade and economic cooperation.
The establishment of the Megafactory not only reinforces Tesla’s position in the global energy storage market but also contributes to China’s ambitions to lead in renewable energy adoption and innovation. The collaboration signals a positive trajectory for future partnerships between global enterprises in addressing environmental issues.
