According to the 2024 report by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, its economic impact is growing, with South-South trade surging from $2.3 trillion in 2007 to $5.6 trillion in 2023. This remarkable growth cements the Global South’s role as a key driver of global commerce.
However, the Global South faces significant challenges. Climate change, energy shortages, and geopolitical pressures strain already vulnerable regions. In 2022, the global population without access to electricity increased by 10 million, with 80 percent residing in Sub-Saharan Africa. Tackling these multifaceted issues demands a cohesive and collaborative approach.
A Partnership for Progress
As the largest developing country, China is a natural member of the Global South. It fosters transformative change through strategic investments, collaborative initiatives, and a shared commitment to sustainable progress. The Karot hydropower project in Pakistan exemplifies this commitment. In 2023, the project generated over 3.1 million megawatt-hours (MWh) of clean energy, benefiting 5 million residents.
China’s vision for the Global South emphasizes partnership and progress. By investing in infrastructure and promoting sustainable development, China aims to address common challenges and support economic growth across developing nations. This collaborative approach not only enhances regional prosperity but also contributes to global stability and development.
