The Chinese Mission to the European Union (EU) on Friday expressed strong opposition to interference in Hong Kong affairs following comments made by an EU official on social media.
A spokesperson for the Chinese Mission to the EU stated that enforcement actions taken by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region’s police force against individuals who have absconded overseas and engaged in destabilizing activities are in line with the Law on Safeguarding National Security in Hong Kong and the Safeguarding National Security Ordinance.
“These are justified actions that meet people’s aspirations and comply with international law and customary practice,” the spokesperson emphasized in a statement.
The spokesperson reiterated that Hong Kong is a law-based society where laws must be observed and lawbreakers held accountable, noting that Hong Kong affairs are purely China’s internal matters.
The Chinese Mission urged the EU to abide by international law and basic norms governing international relations, respect China’s sovereignty and Hong Kong’s rule of law, and cease emboldening anti-China elements destabilizing Hong Kong.
