Modernized Agriculture Drives Rural Revitalization in China

China’s countryside is undergoing a remarkable transformation, as modernized agriculture becomes the cornerstone of rural revitalization. Data indicates that in 2024, China’s grain output ascended to a new milestone of 700 million tonnes for the first time. The contribution rate of science and technology in agriculture surpassed 63 percent, and full-process agricultural mechanization reached a novel height.

These advancements demonstrate the significant benefits that modernized agriculture brings to China, not only enhancing food production but also improving the livelihoods of rural residents. In the first three quarters of 2024, the per capita disposable income of rural residents amounted to 16,740 yuan ($2,293), experiencing a year-on-year growth of 6.6 percent.

Experts emphasize two primary aspects in agricultural modernization: quantity and quality.

From a quantitative perspective, agricultural modernization requires ensuring the security of cultivated land and the supply of key agricultural products while achieving an optimized and balanced variety structure. It’s not merely about abundance; agricultural products should be rationally configured to reduce waste and guarantee that every grain grown by farmers can exert its due role and value.

From a qualitative perspective, the modernization of agricultural quality is paramount. High agricultural output should not be achieved at the expense of soil degradation, pesticide pollution, or excessive fertilizer use. Sustainable practices are essential for the safety of land and agricultural products. Ensuring the quality of agricultural products enhances the dietary safety of residents and is significant in the country’s high-quality development system, as the quality of people’s lives hinges on “eating with reassurance.”

As China continues to modernize its agriculture, the focus on both quantity and quality will drive rural revitalization, ensuring a prosperous future for rural communities and contributing to the well-being of its people.
