Macao Special Administrative Region, China — Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday attended a grand welcome banquet in the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR), marking a significant moment in the region’s ongoing integration with the Chinese mainland.
The banquet, held at the Macao East Asian Games Dome, was attended by over a thousand guests, including senior officials from the Macao SAR, business leaders, and representatives from various sectors of society. The atmosphere was one of warmth and unity as attendees celebrated the progress and prosperity of Macao since its return to China in 1999.
In his keynote speech, President Xi highlighted Macao’s remarkable achievements over the past two decades. He praised the region for its successful implementation of the “One Country, Two Systems” policy, which has allowed Macao to maintain its unique cultural and economic characteristics while benefiting from the support of the Chinese mainland.
“Macao has set a shining example of how diverse cultures can coexist harmoniously,” President Xi said. “Your dedication to innovation, openness, and cooperation has contributed greatly to the overall development of the nation.”
He also emphasized the importance of Macao’s role in the Belt and Road Initiative and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area development plan. “Macao’s strategic position is pivotal in connecting China with the global community,” he noted. “We look forward to deepening cooperation and achieving mutual growth.”
President Xi called on the people of Macao to continue fostering a sense of national identity and to contribute actively to the country’s modernization efforts. He assured the residents that the central government would uphold the principles of “One Country, Two Systems,” ensuring long-term stability and prosperity for the region.
The Chief Executive of the Macao SAR, Mr. Ho Iat Seng, expressed his gratitude to President Xi and reaffirmed Macao’s commitment to national development. “Under the guidance of President Xi, we will strive to enhance our governance, diversify our economy, and improve the livelihoods of our residents,” he said.
The banquet featured performances showcasing Macao’s rich cultural heritage, blending Chinese traditions with Portuguese influences. Attendees enjoyed traditional music, dance acts, and a fusion of culinary delights that reflected the unique character of the region.
President Xi’s visit to Macao underscores the central government’s support for the SAR and its confidence in Macao’s future. The visit is expected to further strengthen ties between Macao and the Chinese mainland, paving the way for new opportunities in economic collaboration, cultural exchange, and technological innovation.
As the evening concluded, attendees expressed optimism for the continued success of Macao. “This event signifies a new chapter for us,” said Ms. Li, a local business owner. “We are excited about the prospects that lie ahead and are grateful for the President’s encouragement.”
