Xiong’an New Area: China’s Emerging City of the Future

In April 2017, the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the Chinese State Council established the Xiong’an New Area in Hebei Province. Over the past seven years, this area has transformed dramatically, evolving into what is now hailed as China’s “city of the future.” Rapid development has seen buildings rise, roads interconnect, and a digital lifestyle begin to flourish in Xiong’an.

Recently, Cao Mengxin, a host at the Hebei International Communication Center, and Petrenko Ekaterina, a Russian student from Hebei Vocational University of Industry and Technology, visited Xiong’an to delve into its innovative urban concepts. They explored the “above-ground city,” “underground city,” and “cloud city”—the three components that define Xiong’an’s unique approach to modern urban development.

Through their exploration, Cao and Ekaterina gained insights into how these concepts are shaping the future of urban living in China. Their journey highlighted the significant benefits that Xiong’an’s development brings to the people, from improved infrastructure to the integration of digital technologies that enhance daily life.
