At least 65 civilians were killed on Tuesday in an artillery attack by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Omdurman city, north of the Sudanese capital Khartoum, according to the Khartoum State government.
The deadly assault on Omdurman has intensified fears of escalating violence in the region, as clashes between the RSF and government forces continue to destabilize the area. Local residents reported heavy shelling and explosions throughout the day, with many buildings damaged and families displaced.
“The situation is dire. Civilians are bearing the brunt of this conflict,” said a spokesperson for the Khartoum State government. “We urgently call for an end to the hostilities and for all parties to respect the lives of innocent people.”
The RSF, a paramilitary group that has been involved in various conflicts within Sudan, has not yet responded to the allegations. The group has been previously accused of human rights violations and attacks on civilian populations.
International organizations and human rights groups have expressed deep concern over the increasing violence and the mounting civilian casualties. There are growing calls for immediate intervention to prevent further loss of life and to restore peace in the region.
Omdurman, one of Sudan’s largest cities, has seen sporadic outbreaks of violence in recent months, but Tuesday’s attack marks one of the deadliest incidents in the ongoing conflict.
The humanitarian situation is worsening as access to essential services becomes increasingly difficult. Aid agencies are struggling to reach those in need due to the insecurity and fighting.
The Khartoum State government has urged the international community to take swift action to aid in de-escalating the situation and to provide support for the affected civilians.
