OpenAI Unveils Sora Video Generator for ChatGPT Plus and Pro Users
In a significant leap forward in artificial intelligence technology, OpenAI has announced the release of Sora, an AI model capable of generating video content from text prompts. Initially introduced in February to a select group of safety testers, Sora is now accessible to all ChatGPT Plus and Pro users as Sora Turbo, at no additional cost.
The Microsoft-backed company, renowned for igniting the generative AI revolution with ChatGPT in November 2022, is expanding its horizons into multimodal AI technologies. With Sora, OpenAI aims to stand toe-to-toe with similar text-to-video tools developed by industry giants such as Meta and Alphabet’s Google, as well as emerging platforms like Stability AI’s Stable Video Diffusion.
“We’re working on tailored pricing for different types of users, which we plan to make available early next year,” OpenAI revealed in a recent blog post, signaling future plans to accommodate a diverse user base.
Users can now generate videos up to 20 seconds long, with resolutions reaching 1080p. The platform supports various aspect ratios, including widescreen, vertical, and square formats, providing flexibility for different content creation needs.
However, Sora is currently unavailable in European Union countries, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. OpenAI stated that the AI model would be accessible in other regions where ChatGPT is present, broadening its reach to a global audience eager to explore this innovative technology.
Addressing concerns over potential misuse, OpenAI emphasized its commitment to ethical standards. The company has implemented strict measures to prevent the creation and upload of harmful content, such as child sexual abuse materials and sexual deepfakes.
“Uploads of people will be limited at launch, but we intend to roll the feature out to more users as we refine our deepfake mitigations,” the company noted, underscoring a cautious approach to user safety and content integrity.
