Torrential rains have unleashed devastating flash floods and landslides across Indonesia’s main island of Java, officials reported on Monday. The natural disaster has tragically claimed at least 10 lives, with rescuers still searching for two missing individuals.
The relentless downpours began last week, causing rivers to overflow and tear through more than 170 villages in the Sukabumi district of West Java province. Lt. Col. Yudi Hariyanto, leading the rescue efforts in Sukabumi, described how mud, rocks, and trees cascaded down the mountainsides, engulfing entire hamlets in their path.
“The force of the water and debris was overwhelming,” Hariyanto said. “Our teams are working tirelessly to locate the missing and provide aid to those affected.”
The catastrophic events have forced over 3,000 residents to evacuate to temporary government shelters. Authorities have issued warnings to nearly 1,000 more people, urging them to leave their homes as extreme weather continues to threaten more than 400 houses in the region.
Local communities are grappling with the aftermath, as landslides, flash floods, and strong winds have devastated infrastructure and livelihoods. Emergency services are coordinating with regional agencies to deliver essential supplies and support to the displaced families.
The Indonesian government is closely monitoring the situation, emphasizing the importance of preparedness and quick response in the face of natural disasters. With the rainy season in full swing, officials are urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and heed evacuation notices promptly.
