Zoo Berlin has officially revealed the names of its adorable baby panda twins: Meng Hao, meaning “beautiful dreams,” and Meng Tian, “sweet dreams.”
The names follow a cherished Chinese tradition of incorporating elements from their mother’s name, Meng Meng. Born on August 22, the twin sisters are the latest additions to the zoo’s panda family and have been captivating visitors and staff alike.
In addition to their Chinese names, the twins have been given German nicknames: Leni and Lotti. These names pay homage to Berlin’s rich cultural heritage. Leni is a nod to Marlene Dietrich, the legendary actress and singer born in the city’s Schöneberg district. Lotti playfully references Charlottenburg, a renowned district known for its historical significance and vibrant community.
“We are thrilled to announce the names of our panda twins,” said Zoo Director Dr. Andreas Knieriem. “These names reflect both their Chinese heritage and their connection to Berlin.”
The naming ceremony underscores the symbolic bond between Germany and China, highlighting the importance of cultural exchange and wildlife conservation. Giant pandas are native to China and are considered a national treasure. The presence of Meng Meng and her cubs at Zoo Berlin symbolizes international cooperation in efforts to protect this endangered species.
Visitors can look forward to seeing Meng Hao and Meng Tian as they continue to grow and explore their surroundings under the watchful eye of their mother. The zoo expects the twins to make their public debut once they are strong enough to navigate their enclosure independently.
Zoo Berlin has been home to giant pandas since 2017, when Meng Meng and male panda Jiao Qing arrived as part of a long-term conservation and research partnership. The birth of the twins marks a significant milestone for the zoo and contributes to global efforts to preserve the giant panda population.
