The 6th Hainan Island International Film Festival, co-hosted by China Media Group (CMG) and the People's Government of Hainan Province, officially opened on Friday evening in Sanya City, south China's Hainan Province. The festival aims to showcase China's burgeoning film industry and foster international cultural exchange.
Liu Xiaoming, deputy secretary of the Hainan Provincial Party Committee, governor of Hainan Province, and chairman of the festival's organizing committee, delivered an inspiring speech to inaugurate the event. He highlighted China's steady transition from a major film producer to a global film powerhouse, emphasizing the film industry's vital role in enhancing Hainan's cultural identity.
“The film festival is a forward-looking initiative for the development of Hainan's Free Trade Port, aiming to establish itself as a core platform for artistic exchange, a significant window for international engagement, and a symbol of China's cultural charm,” Liu noted.
Fan Yun, deputy editor-in-chief of CMG and editor-in-chief of CGTN, also addressed the audience at the opening ceremony, underscoring the importance of media collaboration in promoting cultural exchange.
The event drew government officials from Hainan and representatives from countries and regions including Russia, France, Spain, Hungary, and Austria, reflecting the festival's growing international influence.
Liu pointed out that Hainan has embraced the concept of “year-round screenings, island-wide participation, public involvement, and full industry chain coverage” in organizing the festival. This approach has significantly increased the festival's international recognition and enriched the participation experience for attendees.
“This year's festival exhibits a stronger international atmosphere, with emerging new forces and a richer participation experience,” he said. Liu added that Hainan is committed to promoting the prosperity of the entire film industry chain and aims to build the festival into an everlasting “super brand” for the future.
The 6th Hainan Island International Film Festival serves as a beacon for global filmmakers and enthusiasts, offering a platform to celebrate cinematic achievements and foster cross-cultural connections. As Hainan continues to develop its Free Trade Port, the festival symbolizes the province's dedication to cultural innovation and international outreach.
